Knee pain has a way of shrinking a person’s world. Stairs become a calculation, long walks become a memory, and a favourite hobby quietly gets shelved. At Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara, robotic-assisted total knee replacement is a core part of how we help patients reclaim that ground through an established, refined pathway built around precision, efficiency, and a fuller recovery experience.

Precision guided by your surgeon, not replaced by it

Central to the programme is our expert surgeons equipped with precision technology: a compact, handheld robotic-assisted platform used for partial, total, and revision knee replacements. Your surgeon remains in full control of the cutting tool throughout the procedure; the robotics technology role is to bring software-guided accuracy to decisions your surgeon is already making.

Robotics technology uses image-free smart mapping, which means no pre-operative CT scan or MRI required as the anatomy is mapped intra-operatively. During surgery, a handheld tracking stylus maps your unique knee anatomy and builds a real-time 3D model. This allows your surgeon to check soft-tissue and ligament balance through your full range of motion before any bone is cut, and to plan implant size, placement, and alignment around your anatomy rather than a standard mechanical guide. The system’s boundary-recognition also means the handheld milling tool automatically stops if it strays outside the pre-mapped surgical zone — an added layer of protection for healthy bone and surrounding tissue.

Dr Fong Teck Siong, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Thomson Hospital mentioned, “Robotic-assisted technology allows me to understand and balance the patient’s knee with greater precision, creating a surgical plan tailored specifically to them.”

For patients, the practical benefits are straightforward: less radiation exposure from avoided pre-surgical scans, a more personalised fit, and the preservation of more healthy bone — all factors that can support a smoother, faster recovery, though individual outcomes will always depend on each patient’s condition.

Backed by experienced surgical teams

Technology is only as good as the hands guiding it. Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara’s robotic-assisted knee replacements are performed by consultant orthopaedic surgeons experienced in joint reconstruction and specifically trained on the robotics platform, supported by anaesthetists and a multidisciplinary care team. This combination of surgical expertise and precision technology is what allows the programme to offer both consistency and a plan tailored to each patient’s anatomy.

A clear way to plan for surgery

For patients considering surgery, cost uncertainty is often as stressful as the procedure itself. The Robotic Total Knee Replacement Package offers a primary unilateral total knee replacement, covering robotic-assisted surgery, the knee implant, surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees, a stay of up to three nights in a single standard room, pre- and post-operative investigations, physiotherapy, nursing care, and take-home medication at the cost of RM32,999. It is a package designed to remove financial guesswork from an already significant decision, valid till 31 December 2026, with a free walking frame offered to the first 20 confirmed sign-ups.

(Bilateral and revision procedures, and cases requiring additional intervention, are quoted separately — full terms are available from our TKR Representative.)
