What is Oncology?

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. There is a tremendous amount of research being conducted on all areas of oncology, ranging from cancer cell biology to chemotherapy treatment regimens and optimal palliative care and pain relief. This makes oncology a continuously changing and developing field in our hospital.

Who is an Oncologist?
Cancer is a complex and often frightening disease that requires specialised care. An oncologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and management of cancer. They work with other healthcare professionals, such as surgeons, radiation oncologists and nurses, to provide comprehensive cancer care to their patients.

What Does an Oncologist Do?

An oncologist’s main responsibility is to provide comprehensive cancer care to their patients.

This includes:

  1. Diagnosis
An oncologist will perform a thorough physical exam and order tests, such as blood tests and imaging scans, to diagnose cancer.
  2. Treatment
Once a cancer diagnosis has been made, an oncologist will create a treatment plan that is personalised to the patient’s specific type and stage of cancer. Treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, targeted therapy and immunotherapy.
  3. Management
Oncologists work with their patients to manage symptoms and side effects of cancer and cancer treatment. They may also work with other healthcare professionals, such as palliative care specialists, to provide comprehensive care.
Types of Oncologists

There are three main types of oncologists:

  1. Medical Oncologists
Medical oncologists specialise in the use of chemotherapy and other systemic treatments, such as immunotherapy and targeted therapy, to treat cancer.
  2. Radiation Oncologists
Radiation oncologists focus on applying radiation therapy to treat cancer.
  3. Surgical Oncologists
Surgical oncologists focus on using surgery to treat cancer.
When to See an Oncologist

It is recommended that patients see an oncologist if they have been diagnosed with cancer or if they are experiencing symptoms that may indicate cancer.

These symptoms may include:

  1. Unexplained weight loss
  2. Persistent fatigue
  3. Pain that doesn’t go away
  4. Persistent cough
  5. Unexplained bleeding or bruising
  6. Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  7. Difficulty swallowing
  8. Skin changes, such as yellowing or darkening

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to see a healthcare professional for an evaluation. Your primary care physician may refer you to an oncology doctor in Malaysia if they suspect that cancer may be the underlying cause of your symptoms.

What to Expect at the Oncologist’s Clinic

If you are seeing an oncologist for the first time, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation.

This may include:

  1. Medical History
Your oncologist will ask about your medical history, including any past illnesses or surgeries, as well as any medications you are currently taking.
  2. Physical Exam
Your oncologist will perform a thorough physical exam, which may include a breast exam, a pelvic exam, or a rectal exam.
  3. Diagnostic Tests
Your oncologist may order diagnostic tests, such as blood tests or imaging scans, to help diagnose cancer or to determine the stage of cancer.
Treatment Plan

Your oncologist will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan based on your specific type and stage of cancer. They will discuss the benefits and risks of each treatment option and help you make an informed decision about your care.

  1. Follow-up Care
Your oncologist will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as necessary. They may also work with other healthcare professionals, such as a palliative care specialist, to provide comprehensive cancer care.
